In college, I was the head of publicity and media for an organization called SAIL (Student Association for International Learning), which promoted awareness of international issues on campus and also put together some multicultural exchange events. I designed mostly event flyers and brochures and occasionally some cool stuff like this, which would be for the back of a t-shirt. It’s supposed to say “peace” in nearly every language represented in our organization, but if it says something offensive and contrary, please let me know!

I designed a Web site for my church’s college-age group sometime in 2007. As from previous site postings, I like to stick to a pretty safe 2-column header design. It’s boring, but it’s straight-forward.

I designed a Web site for the Rockbridge Area Conservation Council in Lexington, Va. in the spring of 2007. This was for a class called Public Service Media, where journalism students do meet the media needs of local nonprofit organizations free of charge. Not only was this super rewarding, but I also got to be creative, which was nearly just as awesome. As part of this project, my team produced a Web site and PSA (public service announcement).

Losing the Landfill: Recycled options or wasted dreams for Rockbridge County?
For my senior capstone, I produced and designed a Web site as part of an in-depth reporting project on the possible options for the community once the landfill closes in 2012. I reported on this topic with two other wonderful group members.
During those six weeks, I really enjoyed putting together all the elements of the site. It was after doing this project that I realized that the production side of journalism was my calling.

Primary care physicians facing business challenges
Working on this story was tough. At the same time, finals and research papers for other classes were due; I knew nothing about the healthcare system (my best friend is pre-med, but that doesn’t mean I absorb all that by association); I was learning as I went, and it was difficult to explain a complex issue and system. Now I know what my professors mean when they say journalists have to be experts at something in a such a short amount of time.

‘Smart zoning’ may come to Lexington
For this story, I learned so much about smart zoning and developments, since I previously knew nothing on the subject  (like most of the stories I wrote). I did so much extra reading and extra talking to the Planning Commission (thankfully one of the members was one of my history professors) so I completely understood what smart zoning was. When the meeting with the firm came, I actually knew what was going on. It was awesome.

About:

Hi, I'm Jess.

I graduated from college in June 2009. I majored in journalism and history but have always had a passion for design/creativity.

I originally started this tumblog to have an online HQ for my journalism clips, but expanded it to include other more creative projects I've authored because in this age, I've got to be more than just one thing.

Because really, I'm more than just a journalist. I can write, but I can also be a photog, an editor, a coder and a designer.

The economy may not be so well, but I'm believing that my first job is out there. And it's going to be awesome.

Read more about me at my personal blog, Jess is more. Contact me by email or send me a Tweet.
